The story of the scholarship

Ms. Giuliana Grigoletti, to honor the memory of her only son, a doctor, who died in an accident on 16th February 1992, declared the following in her Last Will and Testament (opened after her death on 28th November 2012):

"So that the memory of my son remains alive, my will is to use my assets to establish a scholarship to help poor students to graduate in medicine.

They can be Italian citizens, foreigners who are resident in Italy or Africans known by Stigmatine Fathers. Their university fees will be paid until they graduate. I leave the authority to establish further details to the testamentary executor".

The NPO "Giovanni Scolaro" Scholarship Association was established to satisfy this testamentary will.

In 2016, 8,567 euros were awarded for four scholarships.

In 2017, 20,391 euros were awarded for eleven scholarships.

In 2018, 41,743 euros were awarded for nineteen scholarships.

In 2019, 56,532.32 were disbursed for twenty-eight scholarships.

In 2020, 136,637 euros were disbursed for twenty-nine scholarships.

In 2021, 76,800 euros were disbursed for nineteen scholarships.

In 2022, 75,050 euros were disbursed for eighteen scholarships.

In 2023, 39,800 euros were disbursed for ten scholarships.

In TOTAL, scholarships were awarded for a total amount of 455,520.32.

The number of scholarships obviously does not correspond to the number of students, because every year they are partly renewed to the same people.

In total we helped 45 students, all foreigners studying in Burundi, Nigeria, Uganda or Italy (Padua, Rome, Bari). The origin of the students is predominantly African, but we have also helped South Americans and a Greek-Albanian girl.

Of these students we have graduated 25 people: 9 doctors (8 from Burundi and a Greek-Albanian girl who graduated in Bari) and 16 nurses, midwives and paramedics (7 from Burundi, 2 from Uganda and 6 non-EU citizens graduated in Rome).

The studies of 20 young people are still underway, which unfortunately we can no longer continue to support (and for some of them this will mean interrupting their studies): around 60,000 euros would still be needed, i.e. ten times our residual assets.
